Campbell stresses that the borders dividing the Earth have been shattered; that myths and religions have always followed the certain basic archetypes and are no longer exclusive to a single people, region, or religion. He shows how we must recognize their common denominators and allow this knowledge to be of use in fulfilling human potential everywhere.

The brilliant author of The Masks of God shares his ideas and speculations on our universal myths, in a fascinating, very personal work which explores the enduring power of the myths that influence our lives and examines the myth-making process from the primitive past to the immediate present.

The Hero with a Thousand Faces: Commemorative Edition (Bollingen Series (General))
Joseph Campbell, Clarissa Pinkola Estes
This book is incredibly insightful in capturing the essence of the human existence. Not only does Joseph Campbell illuminate the monomyth and the hero's travel, but at the same time, out own existence. It is easy to see why it has inspired countless individuals, for instance, Star War's George Lucas. Although Campbell's research and evidence he presents is valid and compelling, the intellectual manner in which he presents it, may be confusing to individuals unaccustomed to such reading (that's to say, he is wordy at times. Think of Yoda , "Faith I have in you Young Skywalker," now think of a rambling Yoda, "The uttermost confidence, I have, as stars surly show themselves at night, in you, young skywalker. Yeesssssss." This, as you may see, can cause some confusion. It may be, that the reader will have to examine the passage more than once, to capture the words Campbell exposes to them. It may be in the reader's best interest to have a webster's dictionary nearby, to quickly decipher any imposing and 'scary' words. However, this small downside to Campbell's masterpiece, should not deter anyone away from absorbing the wealth of knowledge present in The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Likewise, the reader should also acclimate themselves to the myths Campbell provides, it should provide for a more through and enjoyable read. T. Smith June/14/2009

Time and Identity (Topics in Contemporary Philosophy)
Edited By Joseph Keim Campbell, Michael O'rourke, And Harry S. Silverstein
The concepts of time and identity seem at once unproblematic and frustratingly difficult. Time is an intricate part of our experience—it would seem that the passage of time is a prerequisite for having any experience at all—and yet recalcitrant questions about time remain. Is time real? Does time flow? Do past and future moments exist? Philosophers face similarly stubborn questions about identity, particularly about the persistence of identical entities through change. Indeed, questions about the metaphysics of persistence take on many of the complexities inherent in philosophical considerations of time. This volume of original essays brings together these two essentially related concepts in a way not reflected in the available literature, making it required reading for philosophers working in metaphysics and students interested in these topics. The contributors, distinguished authors and rising scholars, first consider the nature of time and then turn to the relation of identity, focusing on the metaphysical connections between the two, with a special emphasis on personal identity. The volume concludes with essays on the metaphysics of death, issues in which time and identity play a significant role. This groundbreaking collection offers both cutting-edge epistemological analysis and historical perspectives on contemporary topics. Contributors : H. E. Baber, Lynne Rudder Baker, Ben Bradley, John W. Carroll, Reinaldo Elugardo, Geoffrey Gorham, Mark Hinchliff,...

The Hero with a Thousand Faces: Commemorative Edition, Vol. 17 Edition 1
Joseph Campbell's classic cross-cultural study of the hero's journey has inspired millions and opened up new areas of research and exploration. Originally published in 1949, the book hit the New York Times best-seller list in 1988 when it became the subject of The Power of Myth, a PBS television special. Now, this legendary volume, re-released in honor of the 100th anniversary of the author's birth, promises to capture the imagination of a new generation of readers. The first popular work to combine the spiritual and psychological insights of modern psychoanalysis with the archetypes of world mythology, the book creates a roadmap for navigating the frustrating path of contemporary life. Examining heroic myths in the light of modern psychology, it considers not only the patterns and stages of mythology but also its relevance to our lives today--and to the life of any person seeking a fully realized existence. Myth, according to Campbell, is the projection of a culture's dreams onto a large screen; Campbell's book, like Star Wars, the film it helped inspire, is an exploration of the big-picture moments from the stage that is our world. Offered for the first time with beautifully restored illustrations and a bibliography of cited works, it provides unparalleled insight into world mythology from diverse cultures. It is a must-have resource for both experienced students of mythology and the explorer just beginning to approach myth as a source of knowledge.

The Inner Reaches of Outer Space: Metaphor as Myth and as Religion (The Collected Works of Joseph Campbell)
Developed from a memorable series of lectures delivered in San Francisco, which included a legendary symposium at the Palace of Fine Arts with astronaut Rusty Schweickart, Joseph Campbell’s last book explores the space age. Campbell posits that the newly discovered laws of outer space are actually at work within human beings as well and that a new mythology is implicit in this realization. He examines the new mythology and other questions in these essays which he described as "a broadly shared spiritual adventure."
Occidental Mythology (The Masks of God, Volume III)
The author of such acclaimed books as Hero With a Thousand Faces and The Power of Myth discusses the primitive roots of mythology, examining them in light of the most recent discoveries in archaeology, anthropology, and psychology
Joseph Campbell : a fire in the mind : the authorized biography
The fascinating biography that illuminates the man whose work changed modern culture • Gives a complete biographical view of Campbell's life and a personal perspective of who he was through the voices of his friends and colleagues • Written by two of Campbell's preeminent students with exclusive access to his notes and journals Joseph Campbell forged an approach to the study of myth and legend that made ancient traditions and beliefs immediate, relevant, and universal. His teachings and literary works, including The Masks of God , have shown that beneath the apparent themes of world mythology lie patterns that reveal the ways in which we all may encounter the great mysteries of existence: birth, growth, soul development, and death. Biographers Stephen and Robin Larsen, students and friends of Campbell for more than 20 years, weave a rich tapestry of stories and insights that catalogue both his personal and public triumphs.
The Politics of Myth : A Study of C. G. Jung, Mircea Eliade, and Joseph Campbell
The Politics of Myth examines the political views implicit in the mythological theories of three of the most widely read popularizers of myth in the twentieth century, C. G. Jung, Mircea Eliade, and Joseph Campbell. All three had intellectual roots in the anti-modern pessimism and romanticism that also helped give rise to European fascism, and all three have been accused of fascist and anti-Semitic sentiments. At the same time, they themselves tended toward individualistic views of the power of myth, believing that the world of ancient myth contained resources that could be of immense help to people baffled by the ambiguities and superficiality of modern life. Robert Ellwood details the life and thought of each mythologist and the intellectual and spiritual worlds within which they worked. He reviews the damaging charges that have been made about their politics, taking them seriously while endeavoring to put them in the context of the individual's entire career and lifetime contribution. Above all, he seeks to extract from their published work the view of the political world that seems most congruent with it. Robert Ellwood is Professor of Religion, Emeritus at the University of Southern California, and the author of numerous books including The History and Future of Faith, The Sixties Spiritual Awakening, and The Fifties Spiritual Marketplace.

Mythos : the shaping of our mythic tradition
Not A Book By Joseph Campbell. See Description Bellow In Square Brackets.
A myth may be thought of as many different things; a metaphor, a psychological orientation, a story, a religious belief. Joseph Campbell imparts that myth is the “dictionary of the language of the soul” (Campbell Inner Reaches, 31) and that one culture’s myth is reflected in all others: the one in the many and the many in the one. Through the lens of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism, myth is both a sacred mandala of a culture, contained in a particular time and space, and a universal macrocosmic web that is intimately connected to all the myths created by the psyche of mankind[This is more likely a transcript of the text of a series of DVDs by this title. It is not a Campbell manuscript.]
