The psychology of science and the origins of the scientific mind

Gregory J. Feist

In this book, Gregory Feist reviews and consolidates the scattered literatures on the psychology of science, then calls for the establishment of the field as a unique discipline. He offers the most comprehensive perspective yet on how science came to be possible in our species and on the important role of psychological forces in an individual’s development of scientific interest, talent, and creativity. Without a psychological perspective, Feist argues, we cannot fully understand the development of scientific thinking or scientific genius. The author explores the major subdisciplines within psychology as well as allied areas, including biological neuroscience and developmental, cognitive, personality, and social psychology, to show how each sheds light on how scientific thinking, interest, and talent arise. He assesses which elements of scientific thinking have their origin in evolved mental mechanisms and considers how humans may have developed the highly sophisticated scientific fields we know today. In his fascinating and authoritative book, Feist deals thoughtfully with the mysteries of the human mind and convincingly argues that the creation of the psychology of science as a distinct discipline is essential to deeper understanding of human thought processes.

Thinking About Acting : Logical Foundations for Rational Decision Making

John L. Pollock, John J. Pollock

John Pollock aims to construct a theory of rational decision making for real agents—not ideal agents. Real agents have limited cognitive powers, but traditional theories of rationality have applied only to idealized agents that lack such constraints. Pollock argues that theories of ideal rationality are largely irrelevant to the decision making of real agents. Thinking about Acting aims to provide a theory of real rationality.

Critical Thinking : Tools for Taking Charge of Your Professional and Personal Life

Richard Paul - Undifferentiated, Richard W. Paul, Linda Elder

What is critical thinking, why is it important, and how is it accomplished? In the book, "Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of Your Professional and Personal Life", Richard W. Paul and Linda Elder present a definition, a reasoned argument for its necessity, and a series of exercises designed to allow the reader to internalize concepts of the book's central themes. Major themes touch on the reformation of our worldview, the apprehension of the extent of our ignorance, and the assessment of the quality of our thinking. The authors posit critical thinkers embrace the notion that beliefs are subject to change as a function of new evidence or better reasoning; change in the quality of this reasoning reveals inconsistencies between objective and subjective data that produce healthy skepticism rather than cynicism. Incremental movement away from egocentric thinking and prejudicial beliefs empowers the "ethical reasoner" with a more empathic understanding of alternative views unencumbered by self-delusion. The take home message here is that the lack of self-absorption and ego-centrism allows the critical thinker to examine questions from multiple perspectives. This examination can reveal that not all information is equal in content or origination; biased or misreported data can skew interpretation and affect thinking from the onset. Reliably vetting data is an invaluable function of the critical thinking process. My one negative assessment of the book rests with the...

The Creative Mind: Myths and Mechanisms, Second Edition

Margaret A. Boden

This work was initially published in 1990, amidst a bumper crop of books about the brain, mind and consciousness. Neuroscientists, psychologists and no-nonsense philosophers were setting off to reclaim the mind from the dark superstitions of religion, art and human specialness. Psychologist / philosopher Margaret Boden decided to stake a claim in the territory of human creativity. In "The Creative Mind: Myths & Mechanisms", she seeks to vanquish those who would defend the irreducible quality of human consciousness with the wonders of its creativity. Boden tries diligently to capture the squishy idea of creativeness. She looks at famous examples of creativity in the arts and the sciences, and comes up with a number of "heuristics" or rules of thumb about it. She then analyzes the creative nature of children in various ways (including analysis of typical children's drawings across ages and stages of development). Next, she examines how computer programs, especially massively parallel neural-networks, are making progress in mimicking human problem-solving. Some programs have indeed come up with problem solutions that humans had not though of. Perhaps then creativity isn't such a mysterious thing. Evolution has given brains with powerful problem-solving capacity to the homo sapiens species, explaining much of their success (thus far). Historical creativity thus becomes a matter of the right person being in the right situation at the right time. The more...

An Introduction to critical thinking and creativity [recurso electrónico] : Think more, Think better

Joe. Y. F. Lau

This book is about the basic principles that underlie critical thinking and creativity. The majority of the content is on critical thinking since more topics are naturally involved and since they can be discussed readily and systematically. The last few chapters are devoted to creativity and research methodology, not typical the book’s plethora of competition. Each chapter introduces a specific topic, usually by introducing the relevant theories in conjunction with realistic examples that show how the theories can be applied. Each chapter concludes with a set of exercises whose solutions are detailed at the rear of the book. While the writing style is purposefully informal, the presentation is complete, at least with respect to the intended introductory level.
