Zen in the Art of Writing: Essays on Creativity: Expanded
This is a delightful, inspiring and extremely useful book on writing. Bradbury talks his evolution as a writer -- what he discovered writing 2000 words every day from the age of 12 to 22, publishing short stories every week in his twenties, and eventually creating novels such as Farenheit 451, Dandelion Wine and the Martian Chronicles. Here is Bradbury's writing routine: "All during my early twenties I had the following schedule. On Monday morning I wrote the first draft of my new story. On Tuesday I did a second draft. On Wednesday a third. On Thursday a fourth. On Friday a fifth. And on Saturday at noon, I mailed out the sixth and final draft to New York. Sunday? I thought about all the wild ideas scrambling for my attention, waiting under the attic lid, confident at last that, because of "The Lake," I would soon let them out. If all of this sounds mechanical, it wasn't. My ideas drove me to it, you see. The more I did, the more I wanted to do. You grow ravenous. You run fevers. You know exhilaration. You can't sleep at night, because your beast-creature ideas want out and turn you in your bed. It's a grand way to live" (62-63). He offers lots of suggestions for how to develop your writing, particularly on his chapter entitled, "How to Keep and Feed a Muse." Here's a sample: Write about what you love and also about what you hate: "What do you love most in the world? The Big and the little Things I mean. What do you want more than anything else in the world? What...
The Cambridge Introduction to Creative Writing (Cambridge Introductions to Literature)
I'm skeptical of this book's claims that it's meant to accompany a course in creative writing - it's not practical enough. Then again, as an academic approach to the topic, why shouldn't we expect it to be found in a classroom? Flipping through this book, I always expect to get more out of it than I actually end up gleaning from its pages. The organization is not particularly helpful; the ten chapters are as follows: 1: Introducing creative writing 2: Creative writing in the world 3: Challenges of creative writing 4: Composition and creative writing 5: Processes of creative writing 5: The practice of fiction 7: Creative nonfiction 8: Writing poetry 9: Performing writing 10: Writing in the community and academy These categories give little indication of where to find what, and the index is not particularly helpful in finding information, either. For instance, why is the section "On Titles" buried in the "Processes" chapter? It's useful; Morley writes: "Like it or not, [the title] may tip the balance between your work being read or not, and it might form part of what is graded within a writing course. You must make your title work as hard as all the words in your piece - harder, in fact, for the title is a door for the reader to open, or a little window through which they peep at the interior, an intrigue making them question whether they should enter or take part. A lazy or imprecise title can damn an entire book" (132). This quote exemplifies the book's value...

How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy (Genre Writing)
The author is engaging, funny, and thoughtful. I get the impression that he truly wants you to write well and gives us a good foothold to get there in the crazy world(s) of science fiction. His humor is spread out over the book and keeps the text lively. I didn't think I was going to read the end of the book on the nuts and bolts of publishing but he had me in his grips and I read on. It was good information or so I hope and at least it gives me some idea of what is ahead. I recommend this book to you. It was published in 1990, but it is still wonderfully relevant and I hope you find it so too.
